The picture on the left is of William Whitmore and his wife Elizabeth, outside Wandon End house c.1856. William Whitmore was the landlord of The Red Lion in the latter part of the 19th century. He is recorded as being a horse dealer and the business was conducted from the rear of the pub. His family lived at Colemans Farm and he is a relative of Richard Whitmore, the TV presenter.

You will need to enlarge the picture on the right. It was taken from the Hertfordshire Express, February 19th 1881. It concerns a fight in the Red Lion involving William Whitmore and the baker, William Pryor. Nothing much changes!
